If you want a truly unique experience and immerse yourself in the "true Bali", away from the crowds, I can highly recommend you my personal and "secret" hideaway resort in Gianyar, Central Bali:

Gubah Bali Exclusive Villas.

Personal recommendation by Manfred Leiter

After my trips around Bali and Indonesia it is always a pleasure to return to this "heaven of peace". It is not cheap, but surely worth every cent and with a service level comparable to a 5-star-hotel, the price-performance ratio is excellent. They have only 6 (six!) spacious and luxurious rooms, heavily decorated with tastefully handcrafted Balinese interiors. I particularly like the traditional Balinese king size beds uniquely decorated with woodcarving and original "songket". All rooms have an own private terrace or even a garden with an additional private entrance gate in Balinese style. It is like having your own private villa in Bali!

In the open air restaurant an excellent selection of very tasteful Balinese and international food is served. Only first-class ingredients are used and everything is prepared only after the customer has ordered it, thus freshness is guaranteed! If you are lucky and the swiss owner of the hotel is in town, then you may even be invited to taste some new creations from the kitchen and help to decide if they should be added to the card.

The whole compound is surrounded by a lush tropical forest and very picturesque rice-fields. The friendly and highly professional staff is very proud to accompany you on walks to explore this wonderful surrounding countryside.

Here are some more pictures of the wonderful villas in Gubah Bali.

Neka Art Museum in Ubud, Central Bali.

Located in a beautiful garden setting overlooking a scenic river valley, the Neka Art Museum is an ideal place to enjoy artworks by Balinese, other Indonesian, and foreign-born artists inspired by the magic of Bali.

Separate buildings based on traditional Balinese architecture take visitors through the history of the development of painting in Bali.

Some examples of the artwork on display can be seen here.

Highly recommended!

Bali Ubud Neka Art Museum - Ni Sasih

Artist: DULLAH (1919-1996; Surakarta, Central Java)
Title: MISS SASIH (NI SASIH) 1977
oil on canvas, 100x70 cm

This realistic portrait is of an ideal Balinese maiden. Her name is the Sanskrit-Balinese word for "moon", which thus equates feminine beauty with the perfection of the full moon. She is dressed in a KAIN SONGKET (brocade) hip-cloth and lacey KEBAYA (long-sleeved blouse). She is picking up a frangipani flower, thus providing a setting that takes this painting beyond mere portraiture. At the top a pavilion, tree-trunk, and a shrine are visible.

The original of the painting is displayed in the highly recommended Neka Art Museum in Ubud, Central Bali.

Lonely Planet Indonesia (6th Ed) Lonely Planet Indonesia (6th Ed)

On planning my trips to indonesia I used this guide book from the Lonely Planet Series.
I was attracted by the clear concept of the book that makes it easy to find the information that you need. It provides all the necessary information for a traveller who wants to get off the beaten track, but also includes the "must see" sights. Especially the Places to Stay and Places to Eat sections are clear and give good and reliable information.
It made my trips to Indonesia easy and worth a while. I strongly recommend a Lonely Planet book if you like to travel and you want to see as much as possible.
